On August 31, 2026 at Campbell River, K’ómoks First Nation and We Wai Kai Nation signed a protocol acknowledging their strong relationship based on the “longstanding historical, cultural and family connections between their peoples.” K’ómoks First Nation and We Wai Kai Nation have committed to “advancing and cultivating a mutually beneficial relationship” and will “address matters of shared interest directly with one another.”
K’ómoks Chief Nicole Rempel comments that “this protocol has been years in the making, and reaching this point is something our Nation is very proud of.” She adds that K’ómoks members “have deep connections throughout this territory, and those connections do not stop at lines on a map. We recognize our historical and current family connections and honour them with the highest respect. This agreement gives us a way to recognize our respective interests, respect one another and move forward together.”
We Wai Kai Chief Ronnie Chickite is “proud to have reached this understanding so that we can support each other, work together, and honour the strong relationships that our Nations had in the past.” We Wai Kai “are committed to the success of this renewed relationship going forward.”
The Province of British Columbia “recognizes the profound significance of this achievement,” but was not part of the Nation-to-Nation protocol.
