Matt is from Manitoba, Treaty 1 territory. He joined Mandell Pinder as an articling student and continues to practice as an associate with the firm. His practice focuses on regulatory law, land and natural resource matters, and First Nations governance. Matt advises clients on navigating environmental assessments, licensing, and permitting processes, marine and fishery-related matters, development of laws and policies, and the negotiation of protocols and agreements. He also has experience assisting charitable and not-for-profit organizations.
Matt worked as a researcher with the Oceans North Conservation Society during law school, which led him to publish work on Nunavut’s environmental assessment process. Before that he spent several years working as a communications professional and organizer for various political and not-for-profit organizations. He also earned degrees in political science – his master’s research examined the impact of R v Gladue and section 718.2(e) of the Criminal Code on sentencing reform and the incarceration of Indigenous peoples in Canada. Matt has continued his advocacy and interest in criminal justice reform as a Board Member with the John Howard Society of Manitoba.
In his spare time, Matt enjoys mountain biking, hiking, and catching live music with his wife. He also still enjoys writing and playing music despite his time as a touring musician never turning into a full-time job. His songs are on Spotify for those curious enough to listen.
