On September 18, 2023, Mandell Pinder LLP lawyer Elisa Penn will present at the Union of BC Municipalities 2023 Convention. Elisa will speak on a panel titled: “Implementing UNDRIP: Guidance for local government.” Along with fellow panelists on panel organized by the Union of BC Indian Chiefs, she will speak on how local governments can implement BC’s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (“DRIPA”) in their policy. The panelists will discuss local governments’ roles and responsibilities to UNDRIP as well as good practices for implantation of these principles.
In its annual convention, UBCM endeavours to understand and “balance the priorities” of community members. It recognizes “opportunities to flourish when [it] embrace[s] inclusivity.” The UBCM acknowledges that the local governments and First Nations are cultivating “relationships and approaches to operations with UNDRIP and DRIPA at the fore.”
The conventions runs from September 18 to 22. For more information see UBCM’s Convention Program.
