Elin Sigurdson & Kendra Shupe to Present at Developments in Aboriginal and Indigenous Law 2022

Mandell Pinder lawyers Elin Sigurdson and Kendra Shupe are scheduled to present at Developments in Aboriginal and Indigenous Law 2022, a conference organized by the Pacific Business & Law Institute to be held on October 13 & 14, 2022 in Vancouver and by webinar. Elin and Kendra will present on the state of the law of equitable compensation, with a focus on the recent developments in that area of the law resulting from the Supreme Court of Canada’s judgment in the case of Southwind v. Canada.

Equitable compensation is an important issue for Indigenous governments with historical claims against Crown governments as it is the basis on which compensation for breach of fiduciary duty is typically assessed. Elin and Kendra were part of the team from Mandell Pinder that successfully argued the appeal in Southwind before the Supreme Court of Canada on behalf of Lac Seul First Nation.
