Matt Austman

Matt is from Manitoba, Treaty 1 territory. His practice focuses on regulatory law, land and natural resource matters, and First Nations governance. Matt advises clients with navigating environmental assessments and related processes, fishery related matters, advocacy and legislative reform, drafting of by-laws and policies, and negotiation of protocols and agreements. He also has experience assisting charitable and not-for-profit organizations.

Prior to becoming a lawyer, Matt earned degrees in political science and worked for a variety of not-for-profit and political organizations as an organizer and communications professional. His master’s research focused on the impacts of R v Gladue and sentencing reform on incarceration rates and Indigenous Peoples in Canada. Matt started at Mandell Pinder as an articling student in 2023.
